Body as Interface

Body as Interface is an interactive installation developed in the context of InKüLe / Room to Expand. The project uses motion tracking, TouchDesigner, and VCV Rack to turn movement into sound.

The starting point was an AirDrum setup: a simple gesture-based instrument that could be understood quickly by people coming from dance, fine arts, and performance backgrounds. From there, the system expanded into a broader installation where movement, sound, and projection were linked in real time.

What the system does

  • Tracks body movement with Microsoft Kinect
  • Sends motion data from TouchDesigner to VCV Rack via OSC
  • Generates sound in real time from gesture input
  • Provides visual feedback through projection

Context

The project was built as a practical example for workshops and public presentation. A later iteration was shown during LNDW 2025 at NewPractice.

My role covered technical development, prototyping, and shaping the installation into a format that could work both as a demonstration and as a performative setup.

Tools

  • Microsoft Kinect
  • TouchDesigner
  • VCV Rack
  • OSC

The goal was not to present technology for its own sake, but to build a system that could be used immediately and understood through interaction.
